FAQs about SMS OTP

What is SMS OTP?
SMS OTP is an electronic signing method based on a One Time Password sent to the mobile phone number of the registered signer/signatory. This signing method will ask the signatory to confirm the last 4 digits of their telephone number to verify their identity and then request the signatory to input the code sent to that telephone number to sign the document.

You might ask yourself, what is the difference then with e-mail OTP? Both will send a code to the signatory, the key difference between SMS OTP and e-mail OTP is that SMS OTP involves an additional authentication factor (a mobile phone, on top of the e-mail address that is necessary for receipt of the link to access the document). This additional authentication factor further increases the level of uniqueness.

How does signing with SMS OTP work?
Signing documents electronically with an SMS OTP is extremely user-friendly and straightforward. The signing method is one of the available signature methods in Nitro Sign, our electronic signatures platform.
To be able to sign with this method, the signatory only needs a mobile phone that must be known by the initiating party. If no mobile number has been registered in Nitro Sign, the SMS OTP signing option will not be available.

A typical scenario may be this:
  1. The signatory receives a link that includes a document (or package of documents) that he or she can sign with an SMS OTP
  2. After clicking on the link, a signer portal will open automatically where the signatory will need to confirm the last 4 digits of his or her phone number that was known by the initiator
  3. The system sends an SMS with an OTP to the signatory´s mobile phone
  4. The user types the code in the signing portal & confirms the documents are signed
What is the coverage of SMS OTP?
According to Statista, the current number of mobile phone users in the world today is 4.78 billion, making up 61.20% of the world’s population. They are all potential users to sign their documents electronically with SMS OTP.

Is signing with SMS OTP legally binding?
The answer is yes! In Europe, the US and a vast majority of countries around the world, digital signatures are legally binding and recognized in their local legislations like UETA eSign Act in US & Canada, eIDAS in Europe, ZERTES in Switzerland.

Let´s take a closer look to the Electronic Identification and Trust Services Regulation (eIDAS Regulation 910/2014/EC). eIDAS forms a legal framework for accepting electronic identities and signatures in Europe. According to this regulation, the SMS OTP signing solution is among the most advanced Simple Electronic Signatures (SES) methods available through Nitro Sign. And there is even more, when customers implement an onboarding procedure, where the phone number is linked to the identity of the person, the SES status can even be upgraded to an AES (advanced electronic signature) status.
What are the Advantages of SMS OTP?
  1. This signing method offers wide coverage as anybody with a mobile phone can sign with an SMS OTP.
  2. People can sign your documents from anywhere in the world. Most countries are by default supported in Nitro Sign. The only thing your signers need is a mobile phone.
  3. It is also a very user-friendly signing method as signers do not require additional tokens or smart-card readers.
  4. Signers are offered a very intuitive and user-friendly signing method whilst also providing a strong validation of their identity.
